Wicked

It's tall, It's fast, It's WICKED! For Lagoon's 2007 season, they've added their tallest, fastest, and most expensive ride to date. Wicked, named by Dave Freed's daughter after the famous play and book, was announced in November 2006 and opened June 1st, 2007. The new roller coaster sits behind Colossus The Fire Dragon, on what was once part of the parking lot.

Easily visible from I-15, this roller coaster looks just as stunning as the ride itself. This is Lagoon’s first custom steel roller coaster and was designed by Lagoon's engineer, Dal Freeman. The park worked with German manufacturer Zierer to make the new kind of coaster come to life.

One of Wicked's unique features is that, unlike many steel roller coasters, it does not have over the shoulder restraints. Instead, Wicked uses a unique lap bar style restraint that locks the lower half of the riders body in place at the waist, thighs and lower legs. This allows the upper half to move freely, adding to the thrill of the ride.

Wicked has very unique elements for the type of coaster as well. Aside from two LSM powered launches, (one horizontal in the station, and up the tower) the coaster features a large, over banked turn, a heartline roll, and a "half-pipe" section.

During the ride, you also go through two tunnels. The first of these is the launch tunnel, inside the station. This is where you are launched up along the tower at nearly 50MPH while sound effects add an extra thrill boost. The second comes just before the ride finishes, as you dip down into the ground after the "lake turn". This tunnel is just a brief dip into the ground, but adds to the ride by echoing the riders' screams so that everyone riding can hear.

Worried about not being able to see? Dont worry, Wicked has specially designed cars with stadium style seating so the view is just as good in the front as the back. The cars also lack the traditional rows of two. Instead, each car has two rows of four, causing those on the outside seats to literally hang over the edge of the track!

Wicked is currently Lagoon's most popular ride by far, and is a wonderfully perfect addition to the park. If you ever need a reason to take a trip out to the park, you can be sure Wicked is a good reason to go.
